Spring Skin Reset: How to Prepare Your Skin for Spray Tan Season in Melbourne

4 min read

Melbourne is finally starting to feel like spring, which means the layers are coming off, events are filling the calendar, and I’m already hearing from more clients who are getting ready for their first tan of the season.

After months of Melbourne winter, your skin often needs a little reset before fresh colour goes on. Dry skin, leftover self-tan and uneven patches can all affect how your spray tan develops and fades.

The good news is, preparing your skin doesn’t need to be complicated. A few simple steps before your appointment will give you a smoother base and help your tan look more even from the first day through to the final fade.

Give Your Skin a Proper Spring Reset

I always say a beautiful spray tan starts with the skin underneath it.

After winter, your skin might be drier than usual, especially around the elbows, knees, ankles and hands. You might also have old self-tan sitting in areas where it has been easy to miss.

Before your next appointment, take some time to remove any old colour and dry skin rather than applying fresh tan over the top.

If you’re unsure where to start, I’ve shared more of my professional preparation advice in How to Prep for Spray Tan: Professional Tips for Even, Long-Lasting Colour.

You want your skin to feel clean, smooth and comfortable before your appointment.

Exfoliate Properly Before Your Spray Tan

Exfoliation is one of the things clients ask me about most, and the timing matters.

The aim is to remove dead skin cells and create a smooth base for your tan. But exfoliating too aggressively or immediately before your appointment can leave your skin feeling irritated.

Pay particular attention to areas where dry skin tends to build up, especially your elbows, knees, ankles and wrists.

I recommend exfoliating the night before your appointment rather than immediately beforehand. This gives your skin some time to calm down while still leaving you with a fresh, even base.

If you’ve experienced a patchy spray tan before, preparation is often worth looking at first. I explain some of the common causes and how to avoid them in

Don’t Forget About Hair Removal

If you shave or wax, plan it ahead of your spray tan.

Try not to leave hair removal until immediately before your appointment. Your skin needs some time to settle, especially if shaving or waxing tends to leave you with redness or sensitivity.

It’s one of those small preparation steps clients sometimes overlook, but it helps create a smoother starting point for your tan.

Hydrate Your Skin Before Your Appointment

Winter can leave your skin feeling dry, so hydration is an important part of your spring reset.

Keep your skin moisturised in the days leading up to your appointment, especially on those naturally dry areas. Well-cared-for skin gives us a much better base to work with.

On the day of your spray tan, though, keep things simple. Avoid applying heavy moisturiser, oils or body products immediately before your appointment unless you’ve been advised otherwise.

We want your skin clean and ready for your fresh colour.

What to Wear on Tan Day

Think loose, comfortable clothing after your appointment.

Tight clothing can rub against freshly applied tan, so I always recommend choosing something relaxed and easy to wear home.

It’s a small detail, but it makes those first few hours after your appointment much easier.

Why Good Preparation Helps Your Tan Fade More Evenly

Everyone wants their spray tan to look beautiful when it first develops, but I’m also thinking about how it will wear and fade.

Good preparation helps create a more even starting point. Removing old colour, gently exfoliating and looking after dry areas all help your fresh tan develop more consistently.

Your aftercare matters too. If you like maintaining your colour between appointments, Velvet Mousse Luxury Self-Tan is a lovely option for topping up your glow at home.

Get Ready for Spring Events

Spring is one of my favourite times of year for spray tanning because the calendar starts filling up again.

Weddings, formals, birthdays, holidays, races, parties and those first warm-weather weekends all give you a reason to feel a little more polished.

If you have an event coming up, don’t leave your skin preparation until the last minute. Give yourself enough time to remove old colour, exfoliate gently and get your skin feeling healthy before your appointment.

I’ve worked with clients across Doncaster and Melbourne who want their tan to look natural, even and suited to their event. My approach is always personalised to your skin, your plans and the finish you want.

Your Spring Glow Starts Before Your Appointment

I know most people think about the finished colour first. How bronzed they want to look, how long they want it to last and how it will look with their outfit.

But the preparation underneath it makes a real difference.

Give your skin a proper reset after winter. Remove old tan, exfoliate gently, keep your skin hydrated and plan your hair removal ahead of time.

These simple steps give me a better canvas to work with and help your spray tan develop and fade more evenly.

Spring is here, and it’s the perfect time to get your skin ready.
