Common Spray Tan Mistakes in Melbourne and How to Avoid Them

Updated: Feb 6

If you have ever had a spray tan go patchy, streaky, or uneven, you are not alone. I see this every week in my Melbourne studio. Most bad spray tans are not caused by the solution. They come down to application technique.

This guide breaks down the most common spray tan mistakes. It explains what is happening on the skin and how to fix it. If you are a client, this helps you know what to look for. If you are learning to spray tan, this is foundational knowledge.

Why Spray Tan Technique Matters More Than Product

Spray tanning is controlled chemistry. DHA reacts with the top layer of skin. When application is uneven, the reaction is uneven.

Small technique errors cause big visual problems.

• Streaks

• Dark patches

• Light gaps

• Muddy hands and feet

This is why professional spray tanning focuses on consistency. Speed, distance, angle, and overlap matter every single pass.

Wrong Spray Gun Angle

Spray tan gun applying solution at the wrong angle, causing horizontal banding and uneven colour across the client’s back in a spray tanning mistake example.

What is happening

The spray gun is held horizontally instead of upright.

What this causes

The spray fan collapses into a narrow band. Solution concentrates in the centre. Overlap drops.

What you see on the skin

• Horizontal banding

• Parallel dark lines

• Uneven depth between passes

Fix this by keeping the gun vertical. Always spray side to side.

Stopping or Reversing While Spraying

Spray tan gun paused while spraying, causing a single dark patch on the client’s upper back from over application in one area.

What is happening

The hand pauses or moves backwards while the trigger is still on.

What this causes

Too much solution hits one spot. The skin floods instead of being lightly misted.

What you see on the skin

• Single dark dots

• One area much deeper than the rest

Your hand should never stop while spraying. Movement first. Trigger second.

Wrong Spray Gun Distance

Spray tan gun held too far from the body, causing dry, powdery and uneven spray tan coverage across the client’s back.

What is happening

The gun is held too close or too far from the body.

What this causes

Too close creates wet, heavy application. Too far causes solution to dry mid air.

What you see on the skin

• Blotchy or shiny patches when too close

• Dry, faded areas when too far

Consistent distance creates consistent colour.

Horizontal spraying instead of vertical passes

Up and down spray tan technique causing horizontal banding and uneven colour across the backs of the legs due to poor spray overlap.

What is happening

The spray hand moves side to side. This creates horizontal passes across the body instead of controlled vertical strokes.

What this causes

Coverage becomes uneven from left to right. Solution builds in strips. Edges get missed. Blend lines become obvious.

What you see on the skin

  • Horizontal streaks across the torso or legs

  • Dark bands where solution overlapped

  • Patchy panels where passes did not connect

The correct technique

Spray tanning is vertical work.

Always move up and down the body.

Vertical passes follow the body’s natural shape and create even, seamless coverage.

Inconsistent Speed

Inconsistent spray tan speed creating light and dark patches across the client’s back, showing uneven colour from uneven hand movement.

What is happening

The hand speeds up in some areas and slows down in others.

What this causes

Some areas receive too little solution. Others receive too much.

What you see on the skin

• Patchy coverage

• Obvious light and dark sections

Your speed should feel boring. That is how you know it is right.

Over Spraying Problem Areas

Over spraying hands, feet, elbows, and knees causing darker, muddy spray tan results on thicker skin areas compared to the rest of the body.

0

What is happening

Too much solution is applied to hands, feet, elbows, and knees.

What this causes

These areas absorb more DHA. The skin is thicker and darkens faster.

What you see on the skin

• Dark hands and feet

• Muddy elbows and knees

These areas need less product, not more. Light mist only.

Wrong Client Positioning

Incorrect client positioning during spray tanning, causing light patches and missed areas around the neck and upper back where the skin is not fully exposed.

What is happening

The client is not positioned to open creases and folds.

What this causes

Spray cannot reach inner thighs, under arms, or skin folds.

What you see on the skin

• Light gaps

• Missed areas

Client positioning is part of technique. You cannot spray what you cannot see.

Not Covering Evenly

Uneven spray tan coverage on the torso showing streaks and patchy light and dark bands caused by inconsistent overlap during application.

What is happening

Spray passes do not overlap consistently.

What this causes

Some areas build colour. Others stay light.

What you see on the skin

• Streaks

• Patchy bands

Each pass should overlap the last. This controls depth.

Spraying Over Deodorant Residue

Spray tan reacting with deodorant residue, causing a temporary green discolouration in the underarm area during spray tan development.

What is happening

Deodorant residue reacts with the solution during development.

What this causes

The tan can appear green while processing.

What you see on the skin

• Green tone in the underarms

This usually rinses off. Prevention is better. Never spray directly into armpits.

Too Much or Too Little Solution

Comparison of too much versus too little spray tan solution on the torso, showing heavy, wet application on one side and very light, underdeveloped colour on the other.

What is happening

Either the skin is flooded or barely coated.

What this causes

Too much looks heavy. Too little barely develops.

What you see on the skin

• Sticky patches

• Very faint colour

Spray tanning is about light layers. Depth comes from control, not volume.

Ā The Role of Solution Quality in Spray Tan Results

Technique always comes first. But the solution you use still matters.

A high quality spray tan solution gives you more control. It sprays evenly. It develops predictably. It fades clean.

This is why I use and retail Velvet Mousse Luxury.

Velvet Mousse Luxury self tan mousse by Spray Tan Queen displayed on a neutral studio backdrop, showcasing the premium spray tanning formula.

Velvet Mousse Luxury is designed to:

• Spray evenly without clogging or spitting

• Develop with balanced colour, not orange or muddy tones

• Fade gradually without harsh patching

• Work with proper technique, not against it

When technique is correct, a solution like Velvet Mousse Luxury enhances the result. It does not mask mistakes. It rewards good application.

If you are a client, this means a more natural looking tan that wears better.

If you are learning to spray tan, this means fewer variables while you build skill.

Why Technique Still Matters Even with a Premium Solution

No solution can fix:

• Incorrect gun angle

• Inconsistent speed

• Over spraying hands and feet

• Poor client positioning

Velvet Mousse Luxury performs best when applied correctly. Light layers. Consistent passes. Controlled overlap.

This is how you get that clean, even, skin like finish.
